It is essential for people to come together to protect those most vulnerable to the coronavirus pandemic. Small acts of kindness as a volunteer can save lives and alleviate pressure on healthcare systems. If communities come together safely, we can all play our part.
In the UK, the NHS has called for 250,000 volunteers to help 1.5 million immunocompromised people who must shield themselves at home for 12 weeks. Volunteers deliver essential prescriptions from pharmacies, deliver patients to appointments and make phone calls to check on those self-isolating. Other countries could so the same, or individuals could set up neighbourhood-run schemes for the local elderly and vulnerable.
